Australia’s Heritage

The National Trust in Australia is the only conservation organisation that cares for all heritage- natural, cultural, built, tangible and intangible. We work to conserve Australia’s Heritage for the future for all Australians. The National Trust is proud to be a sponsor of the National History Challenge, special category of Australia’s Heritage.

Celebrations, memories and history are the stuff that makes our heritage- that makes us what we are.
Heritage is something we inherit from the past and value enough today to leave for the future. The stories of our celebrations, our memories and our history are passed from father to son, from mother to daughter, from generation to generation as part of our identity and heritage.

The National Trusts of Australia challenge you to research celebrations, memories and history that have contributed to our shared Australian Heritage.
Examples can be found among the stories of the people who lived in National Trust properties or other places.  The heritage may be of national or local significance, widely known or personal; it may be associated with a building or place or exist only as intangible memory or story. It may be written in a letter or recorded in a newspaper or other document, or it could be part of our oral heritage. It could be a language, tradition or a piece of music.

This competition gives you the opportunity to be a historian, investigating your community and exploring your own past and heritage.

Criteria
All students from year 5 to year 12 can enter this category.

You must address Australia’s heritage in your work but while you do not have to use a National Trust resource to enter this category, this is encouraged.

You can present your work in any format:

We are looking for original approaches to research, evidence of quality investigation, and a clear and logical argument, the use of community resources and effective presentation.

Ideas and Resources
We encourage students to use National Trust resources in their research, and while visiting a Trust property offers a most rewarding experience, you do not have to visit a property to research it.

Using a Trust resource may include:
